Nostalgic Retail Series #52 - DRUG EMPORIUM

The parent company died in 2001. A few of the stores survived and are still open in 2026.

If you ever bought name-brand shampoo off a stacked delivery case, under a handwritten sign, in a box the size of a grocery store, you shopped Drug Emporium. And if you were in Atlanta in the late 80s, you didn't have much choice. For a stretch, it dominated the drugstore market here.

Phil Wilber spent 22 years in traditional chain drugstores before opening the first Drug Emporium in a Columbus, Ohio strip center in October 1977. The model was simple: brand names at deep discounts, sold out of cheap, oversized, second-generation retail space. The savings weren't in the merchandise. They were in the rent.

Timeline:

• 1977: First store opens in Columbus with roughly $500K in startup capital.
• 1983: 27 franchised stores. A reorganization creates Drug Emporium, Inc.
• 1993: Peak. 252 stores in 28 states, nearly 300 counting the F&M and VIX banners.
• 1994: Retrenchment begins. Washington DC area stores sold to CVS.
• Late 90s: DrugEmporium.com burns cash chasing "click and mortar" before anyone knew what that meant.
• April 2001: Chapter 11, filed as a condition of its sale to Snyder Drug.
• September 2003: Snyder's files its own Chapter 11. Every remaining corporate store closes.
• 2026: Drug Emporium stores still operate in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas with 9 locations in total.

Read that last line again.

What killed the corporate chain was a squeeze. Walmart and the warehouse clubs beat it on price. Walgreens and CVS beat it on the corner pad, powered by the pharmacy traffic Drug Emporium never built. A deep discounter with no prescription engine had nothing left to defend.

But the franchisees who owned their markets never stopped. No NASDAQ growth mandate. No dot-com bet. Just cheap boxes, local buying muscle, and customers who never left.
